Ron DeSantis got the popular Iowa governor’s endorsement. But does it really matter?

The lasting impact of the endorsement is doubtful, of course. Endorsements can matter in presidential races. Just look at what Rep. James Clyburn’s backing did for now-President Joe Biden ahead of the South Carolina primary he rode to the nomination in 2020. But the problem for DeSantis is that the frontrunner in the GOP primary isn’t some Republican equivalent of a Pete Buttigieg or, even, Sen. Bernie Sanders. It’s Donald Trump. And as much as Iowa Republicans may like Reynolds, they like the former president a lot, too. A Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll last week showed Trump running…

Rod Blagojevich has thoughts about the Trump trials

“President Trump has every reason to be testy with that judge,” Blagojevich said on Tuesday. “Here’s another example of how brave he is, willing to stand up and do what he’s doing in front of the judge, who’s going to actually make a ruling and decision on his case.” He also lauded Trump for “the kind of chutzpah he shows … right there in the lion’s den.” In Trump, Blagojevich recognizes a kindred spirit. He told POLITICO that Trump is a victim of overzealous prosecutors, just as Blagojevich believes he was in his own case. The former Illinois governor was…

Working-class voters left Dems over progressivism. Will crime and immigration reform bring them back?

Working-class voters left Dems over progressivism. Will crime and immigration reform bring them back?

Leonhardt’s book examines modern economic history through the ideas of the New Deal’s architects, labor leaders like George Meany and Walter Reuther; and their intellectual opponents, conservatives like Milton Friedman and Robert Bork. As Leonhardt tells that story, he says the Democratic Party has made a politically risky leftward turn away from blue collar voters and toward high-brow, progressive culture warriors. And he has a warning for Democrats: their recent successes may be an illusion. At the heart of Leonhardt’s history of the rise and fall of the American Dream is a story about how Democrats ceded the loyalties of…

An anti-Trump group produced four ads attacking his legal troubles. They backfired.

An anti-Trump group produced four ads attacking his legal troubles. They backfired.

Three of the four actually boosted Trump’s support among the participants. One — a softer-touch spot that features a voter saying Trump’s trials “worries” him — had no measurable impact on Trump’s numbers. The unaired ads, along with nearly 260 pages of accompanying data analysis, were obtained by POLITICO. Strategists with the conservative anti-Trump political action committee, Win It Back PAC decided to shelve the commercials. They remain unaired. Win It Back PAC representatives declined to comment. The behind-the-scenes deliberations around the ads underscores how Trump’s legal problems have, if anything, helped — not hurt — his standing in the…

Photos of Obama’s presidential center construction site in Chicago

He acknowledged tensions surrounding the campus’ impact on its South Side neighborhood as residents worry the gleaming new complex will displace lower-income residents. Obama toured the site while he was in Chicago this week for the Obama Foundation’s Democracy Forum, a symposium that will take on artificial intelligence and political discourse this year. The former president also plans to headline an alumni party on Friday evening with more than 2,500 members of his administration and political teams to mark the 15th anniversary of his historic 2008 election. The celebration will include remarks by Michelle Obama, Jen Psaki and Kal Penn…
